A Flutter Jump is an ability that allows Yoshis to briefly hover in the air; it has appeared in most games since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which was the first to feature it. The flutter jump, along with eating friends, foes, fruit, and more with his tongue, is one of Yoshi's most well-known skills, and often helps out on Mario's quests to save Princess Peach. Usually, this ability is triggered by pressing and holding the "jump" button. Ludwig Von Koopa, one of the Koopalings, can also Flutter Jump, but he can stay in the air for a longer time than the Yoshis. Luigi can also flutter jump in some of his appearances, although it doesn't gain him any height instead it allows him to slowly descend with more control. Yoshi can also use the Flutter Jump in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a recovery move, which gives him one of the most versatile jumps in the game. In Yoshi's Story, the Flutter Jump can be powered up by the Heart Fruit once Yoshi consumes it.
