“It couldn't be in the river, right?”
― Cousteau, after losing his house key, Animal Crossing: City Folk
Cousteau (ハルマキ, Harumaki) is a jock frog villager in the Animal Crossing series. He first appeared in Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, but was absent in Animal Crossing: Wild World and made a reappearance in Animal Crossing: City Folk. His name is French, and some famous Frenchmen have had it as a second name. His name and personality together may refer to Jacques Cousteau. His initial phrase, "oui oui", is French for "yes yes" (or agreement, so usually just "yes"). His species relates to the common French stereotype in which frogs are a type of food, specifically frog's legs.
Despite his appearance and initial phrase in English-language localizations of the game, his name in Japanese means "spring roll", a traditionally Chinese dish. His house also has an east-Asian theme to it.
Appearance
Cousteau is a yellow frog with orange spots. He also has a black mustache on his face which goes with his French name and quote. He has white on the tips of both hands, and a brownish color on his feet. His original shirt is a Rally Tee.
House
In Animal Crossing (GCN) and Animal Crossing: City Folk, Cousteau has many items from the Exotic Series, such as the Exotic Bed and the Exotic Screen. He also uses the matching wall and flooring, the Exotic Rug and the Exotic Wall. In Animal Crossing, K.K. Reggae plays. Beginning with Animal Forest e+, Imperial K.K. plays on a Reel-To-Reel to fit the Asian feel of it.
Cousteau's house in Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a bit different from the past games. It now has an Asian restaurant feel to it, due to the Lazy-Susan Table, salad bar, and revolving spice rack. He still has Exotic furniture, such as the Exotic Table, and two Exotic Screens. He also still has the Exotic Rug, and Exotic Wall, as well as a Reel To Reel playing Imperial K.K.
